A freight forwarder is a company that acts as an intermediary between shippers and carriers, organizing and coordinating the international movement of goods. They do not own the means of transport (ships, aircraft, trucks) but contract these services on behalf of their clients, optimizing routes, costs, and transit times.
The freight forwarder organizes transport; the customs broker handles customs clearance. They are complementary functions. Many companies offer both services (logistics integration), but they are legally distinct activities.
Freight forwarders are especially valuable for companies that lack the volume or experience to negotiate directly with shipping lines or airlines. By grouping cargo from multiple clients, they can obtain better rates and offer comprehensive international logistics service.
