How to import non-alcoholic beverages to Mexico

Imported non-alcoholic beverages must comply with front-of-package warning labels and may be subject to IEPS sugar tax.

Step-by-step import process

COFEPRIS registration

Obtain operating notice as a beverage importer.

NOM labeling compliance

Beverages must carry warning seals, nutrition facts, and importer information in Spanish.

Tariff classification

Classify by beverage type, sugar content, and composition.

Calculate IEPS

Sugar-sweetened beverages pay IEPS of approximately $1.58 MXN per liter.

Sanitary inspection

NOM compliance verification at customs.

Customs clearance

Pay duty, VAT, and applicable IEPS.

Common duty rates

Tariffs: juices 20%, sodas 20%, mineral water 20%. Additional IEPS for sugar-sweetened beverages. USMCA products may pay 0% duty.
