An import license is a prior government permit that must be obtained before importing certain controlled products. It functions as a control and supervision mechanism for sensitive imports. In Mexico, different authorities issue licenses by product type: Ministry of Economy (textiles, steel), SEDENA (weapons, explosives), SEMARNAT (hazardous materials, forestry products), COFEPRIS (psychotropic substances), and IFT (telecommunications equipment). The license must be valid at the time of customs clearance.
