Also known as: HS subheading, 6-digit code, Subpartida arancelaria
A six-digit subdivision of the Harmonized System (HS) that identifies merchandise with greater precision within a tariff heading, standardized internationally.
A tariff subheading is the six-digit level of the Harmonized System (HS) that subdivides a four-digit heading to identify a group of goods with greater precision. The first six digits are universal and identical in all countries using the HS (over 200 countries). It is the base upon which each country adds national digits to create its own tariff nomenclature.
Chapter: 2 digits (e.g., 84 = mechanical machinery). Heading: 4 digits (e.g., 8471 = data processing machines). Subheading: 6 digits (e.g., 8471.30 = laptops). National code: 8+ digits (e.g., 8471.30.01 in Mexico).
In Mexico, the full tariff code has 8 digits (6-digit subheading + 2 national digits). While subheading 8471.30 (portable computers) is the same in Mexico, the U.S., China, or the EU, additional national digits distinguish specific types of laptops for domestic tariff purposes.
