A single customs entry error can cascade into penalties, shipment delays, and even cargo seizures. Whether you are filing entries in the US through ACE or in Mexico through VUCEM, the same fundamental mistakes recur across industries. Here are the five most common errors and how to prevent them.

1. Incorrect Tariff Classification

Misclassifying goods under the wrong HTS or tariff code is the single most common error. It affects duty rates, trade agreement eligibility, and regulatory requirements. A product classified under the wrong heading can result in overpaying duties by thousands — or underpaying and facing penalties plus back-duties during an audit.

2. Incorrect Transaction Value

Customs value must include the actual price paid plus assists, royalties, and certain shipping costs. Declaring an incorrect value — whether through error or intentional undervaluation — triggers severe penalties. In the US, CBP can assess penalties of up to four times the unpaid duties.

3. Missing or Incomplete Documentation

Commercial invoices, packing lists, certificates of origin, and permits must be accurate and complete. A missing document can hold your shipment at the port for days or weeks, incurring demurrage and storage fees that quickly exceed the value of the goods.

4. Wrong Country of Origin

Declaring the wrong country of origin affects trade agreement eligibility (USMCA, for example), antidumping/countervailing duty rates, and marking requirements. This error is particularly dangerous because it can trigger fraud investigations.

5. Late or Incorrect ISF Filing

For US ocean imports, the Importer Security Filing (ISF 10+2) must be filed at least 24 hours before cargo is loaded onto a vessel. Late or inaccurate ISF filings can result in penalties of $5,000 per violation. Automating ISF data capture from purchase orders and bills of lading significantly reduces this risk.
